Hear From One of Our Evaluators on What it’s Like to Work at Appen

Becoming a freelance evaluator with Appen can allow you the freedom to make your life truly your own. You can work on projects at the junction of where technology, social media and marketing meet, meaning the work is interesting and flexible. Most importantly, working from home permits you to make additional income while having time for things that matter most, like family.
I wanted to do something different and Appen met criteria that I was looking for that other jobs didn’t offer, like working on projects by myself and learning more about social media. –Kimberly M., Social Media Evaluator at Appen
Meet Kimberly, a self-described “Pinterest Maven” who has been a Social Media Evaluator with Appen since March 2017 in California. Freelancing with Appen allows her to supplement her income as a part-time jewelry designer so that she can devote 2 days a week to homeschooling her daughter.

What was your first impression of Appen?

My first impression was that it was too good to be true. I saw an ad for Appen and figured since I was on social media all the time it would be great to be paid to do what I already do for free.

What prompted you to look for remote work?

I was specifically looking for a work from home job when I applied to Appen. Having worked in Customer Service before, I wasn’t interested in the traditional customer service work from home jobs that were out there. I wanted to do something different and Appen met criteria that I was looking for that other jobs didn’t offer, like working on projects by myself and learning more about social media. It’s been interesting for me to see the other side of social media; it’s given me a window into a world that I never would have known existed or seen before. That’s really exciting for me.

How do you find your work/life balance?

Previously, I worked full-time at 40-60 hours per week and was never able to spend the time I wanted to with my daughter. The past year with Appen has been a blessing because I’m able to spend so much time with her now while also making money for my family. I have the flexibility to teach her when she’s homeschooled for 2 days a week, which is something I’ve always wanted to do. I don’t have to worry about leaving her with someone else or afterschool care, or worry about childcare over the summer. I love that I have the flexibility to take her on homeschool field trips and do activities as a family with the extra money I make with Appen.

What has surprised you most about working for Appen?

It isn’t super hard work – it’s repetitive, but it’s really good pay for what you’re doing. I’ve always been supported by the Project Managers and Auditors who look after my work.

What do you find most rewarding about the job?

Freelancing in general is super rewarding because it’s flexible in nature. It’s given me an opportunity to spend time with my family and daughter – I couldn’t have this if I worked in an office. This was the most important thing to me in the beginning and is the most rewarding part of my experience with Appen.

What advice do you have for prospective Appen candidates?
